Description

This policy identifies Azure Reservations that are set to expire within the next 60 days. Azure Reservations offer substantial cost savings compared to pay-as-you-go pricing by committing to one-year or three-year terms for various resources.

Rationale

Tracking upcoming reservation expirations is essential for cost optimization. Allowing a reservation to expire without renewal may result in a sudden increase in expenses, as associated resources revert to on-demand pricing. Proactive monitoring ensures organizations continue to benefit from discounted rates while allowing sufficient time to assess current usage patterns and make informed decisions about renewing, modifying, or discontinuing reservations.

Impact

If a reservation expires without renewal, the covered resources will automatically incur charges at the higher pay-as-you-go rate. This can cause unplanned budget overruns. For reservations that guarantee capacity, expiration may also affect resource availability during peak demand periods.

Remediation

Review reservations that are approaching expiration and determine whether to renew, purchase an alternative reservation, or allow the reservation to expire. Taking timely action helps preserve cost savings and prevents unexpected billing increases.

Using the Azure Portal

  1. Review Usage and Recommendations
    • Navigate to the reservation's overview to evaluate its utilization over the commitment term.
    • Review Azure’s recommendations, which may include renewing the reservation, adjusting the quantity, or selecting a different scope.
    • Assess whether the reservation has delivered cost benefits and if your current or projected usage patterns justify a new commitment.
  2. Take Action
    • If continued coverage is required, purchase a new reservation with the same or modified terms.
    • If the reservation is no longer needed (e.g., the associated resources have been decommissioned), take no action. The reservation will expire automatically, and any remaining resources will be billed at pay-as-you-go rates.
